It’s time to have that awkward conversation…

“Why are you brown?”, “Why have you got black hair on your arms?” “You can’t play with us because you’re brown.”, “You’re the same colour as chocolate.” These were just a few of the comments I was faced with as a child. It’s awkward to read but imagine how awkward it was to experience.

I’m ashamed to say this but I felt humiliated and so desperately wanted to be white. I couldn’t understand why I was brown and didn’t know how to respond, I never spoke about it because I didn’t want to be seen as a troublemaker and carried on the best I could. This wasn’t the 70’s, this was primary school in the 90’s so we’re talking about 25 years ago.

I didn’t fully accept who I was until I went to university; that felt like a clean slate, a level playing field where I could be myself and I started to like who I was on the outside as well as the inside.

Having seen the media respond to George Floyd’s death in recent days has stirred memories of my own experiences of racism which is why it’s now time to have that conversation and educate ourselves. I don’t have all of the answers, there’s still a lot I need to learn but that’s where social media is working its magic. There is so much content out there; now more than ever we are flooded with videos, recommendations on what to read and watch, and ideas on how we can help the Black Lives Matter movement so let’s take advantage of it. I came across a video explaining white privilege by @themanacho (Emmanuel Acho) on IG TV and this explains it in a nutshell so check him out and be sure to watch it.

We’re in 2020 and racism still exists; that’s uncomfortable. Its time make the world a level playing field and give everyone the same opportunities regardless of their skin colour. We all bleed the same and cry the same tears so why should the colour of your skin hold you back.

I genuinely didn’t know whether to post this or not but then I realized now isn’t the time to remain quiet. Silence won’t change things, but noise will. Share your experiences and thoughts, educate yourself, make donations, do whatever gives you peace but don’t stop. This isn’t the latest trend to jump on, it’s a revolution that’s been underway for many, many years and, now, with the power of social media and people’s voices we may be able to see change.
