BE THE FRUIT SALAD
Networking isn’t about collecting the most business cards;
it’s about developing relationships.
I don’t see myself as a natural salesperson so don’t necessarily have the gift of the gab like most do which is why I sometimes find networking events a little daunting, especially if I don’t know anyone. What I am remembered for is my personality, my work ethic, and my quirky sense of style.
Having worked in the live events industry for over two years it amazes me how many relationships I’ve already developed in this short time. I now feel confident going to an event by myself and walking up to a group of people as it’s highly likely I will know someone within that group.
What I find helps me is wearing something bright or glitzy as that’s how people remember me; and it helps my colleagues find me at 1am when I’ve had too much to drink and we need to get our cab home!
And that’s where my headline comes from. I was recently at an awards ceremony and my other half commented that I looked like a fruit salad as I was wearing a bright yellow and orange floral print dress - in his defence he was paying me a compliment which I didn’t see at the time. But when our company won an award that night one of my best friends messaged me straightaway to tell me I was all over Twitter as the AV crew had picked up on me walking onto the stage to collect the award. The Twitter pic in question was a yellow blob hugging a gold blob, nothing more. It also allowed fellow industry colleagues to point out who I was to the guests on their table therefore getting my name out even more.
I have learnt over the last 12 months how important relationships are; both personal and professional. People do business with people; even as we move further and further into a technology focussed world it’s still human interaction which we rely on. Who do you call the day before an event and you need something printed urgently? Who do you call when your furniture delivery is delayed and won’t get to you until after opening morning? Most importantly who do you call when you need to vent because you’re up to your eyes in delivering what will be the best event you have ever managed? I have my network for all of those, do you?
Sometimes it pays to stand out from the crowd, something which I like to incorporate in all of my marketing and brand projects. I love making brands stand out in what may be a busy marketplace through creativity and brand values. This shines through in all channels of communication whether it be print or digital.
