Top Traits of a marketeer

"Happiness is when your passion and career collide..."

Marketing is ever-evolving; there’s no question about it so what’s the route to success?

For all those who are starting out your career in marketing, I bet it’s a lot different to how I started out 12 years ago! Social media wasn’t really on the radar and I remember building websites in Dreamweaver. I also had my trusted notebook and pen with me – that bit hasn’t changed to be honest however the notebooks and pens are becoming more and more luxurious with each purchase (that’s the stationary geek in me!)

So as I look back, I look at how much I’ve changed from the early days and the key skills I have adopted to be successful. Marketing has always been my passion but without these foundations I wouldn’t be where I am today.

Organisation

As a marketeer you are working on multiple projects at any one time and sometimes managing multiple agencies unless you’re doing the work yourself.

Only recently I have been made aware of apps such as Basecamp, Active Collab, Slack and Asana to manage projects and agency relationships. It’s actually quite overwhelming how many business apps I have on my phone so I can keep on top of everything but at the same time it’s calming because I am aware of everything that’s going on.

The only way I remain organised is my trusted paper based diary - what if my iPhone malfunctions and I lose everything?! Yes I am of that generation - I was gifted the most beautiful Ella Iconic 2020 planner recently which no doubt will help me keep all my appointments, campaigns, projects and home life synchronised.

Adaptability

I have worked in many industries and the ability to adapt has been one of my biggest strengths. Your marketing skills will always be your foundation; this is something you can take from one business to another and the only thing you need to learn is the lingo before you apply it to that industry. I have many templates which I have created and adapted over time which help me to manage my budgets and marketing campaigns effectively. I can take this and apply this to any new project only updating the details necessary to that business

Learning

Instagram, Pinterest and LinkedIn are all sources of inspiration for me. I am always reading articles on how to perform better, how to be more time efficient, how I can maintain an effective work-life balance etc and these are all saved in Pocket (another useful app). Everything I follow is relevant and helps me to grow so always keep reading. More recently I have been reviewing the course content on Udemy to brush up on a few skills and there are some great freebies available.

Support

You can’t do this by yourself so don’t for one second think you can. I have worked in many organisations where I have been the sole marketeer but even though I was on my own on the org chart, I was never alone physically. The people around me are the ones that have supported me wholeheartedly, helped me grow and pushed me to be the best version of myself.

Having someone to always bounce ideas with and talk through the challenging days is key; I always used to be scared of presenting ideas because I thought they would just get laughed at but not anymore. As long as you can justify why it should work, how it can be executed and most importantly the cost implications, then go for it. Today’s world of marketing is becoming more and more disruptive so anything is possible to create that memorable brand experience.

These are my foundations for growth and I'm keen to hear what your foundations are…
